A little ground squirrel popped its head up behind one of the rocks and glared at me. “Why are you bothering us?” it squeaked.

Recently, I had decided to start asking around for a business coach. I realized I needed a business coach after losing my steam about creating a business. I had wanted to get the word out about obedience classes being for humans, not dogs. I thought dogs would be beating down the door to drag their humans to obedience classes.

“I just want to ask a question,” I said. “I don’t want to eat you.”

The squirrel sniffed. “I’ve heard that before. Right before there’s a pounce.”

“Really,” I said, sitting down and trying to look as non-threatening as possible. “I eat dog food. Every day. I get it in my bowl. I don’t want to eat squirrels.”

The squirrel swished its tail. “If I answer your question, will you go away?”

I cocked my head. “I can’t go away too far, I live here. I guess I could go back in the house.”

The squirrel glared again. “I meant leave us alone.”

I agreed and asked if the squirrel knew of any business coaches.

The squirrel swished its tail. “Business coaches? I don’t have time for business coaches. I have to spend my time looking for food and keeping myself from being food.”

I sighed and started to turn away. “Thanks anyway.”

“But,” the squirrel said. “I think I might know someone who could help you…”

Aspiring to Bigger Things

Posted in A Dog's World, Business Tips at 11:34 am by Nick the Border Collie

Maddie, my packmate, had a point. I should be looking for a business coach from animals who have aspired to more than hanging out at the same clump of grass for generations, like the snail I was talking to.

Recently, I had decided to start asking around for a business coach. I realized I needed a business coach after losing my steam about creating a business. I had wanted to get the word out about obedience classes being for humans, not dogs. I thought dogs would be beating down the door to drag their humans to obedience classes.

So what animals aspired to bigger things than staying in one place? I pondered this. Maybe I should look for ones that are more mobile. Such as the little ground squirrels that hang around the rocks.

Unfortunately, the little ground squirrels didn’t want to talk to me. The moment I got close, they squeaked and ran off. Worse, they started scolding me. Except they talked so fast I couldn’t understand them. I tried to get in a word edgewise and they just chattered faster.

Maddie trotted over. “I don’t think that’s going to work,” she said.

“But why?”

Maddie shook herself. “Maybe because dogs eat ground squirrels?”

I looked back at the ground squirrels, who were twitching their tails and glaring at me. “I’m not going to eat one though. I just want to talk to one.”

Maddie trotted away. “Good luck with that,” she called out.

Finding a coach

Posted in A Dog's World, Business Tips at 11:24 am by Nick the Border Collie

After my conversation with Ralph, I was all set to find myself a business coach.

Recently, I had decided to start asking around for a business coach. I realized I needed a business coach after losing my steam about creating a business. I had wanted to get the word out about obedience classes being for humans, not dogs. I thought dogs would be beating down the door to drag their humans to obedience classes.

So I started asking around again. I started with the little green snake that lives under the deck.

“Do you know where I can find a business coach?” I asked.

The snake’s tongue darted out of its mouth. “I’m just trying to stay alive here, I don’t have time for business coaches.”

Next I found a snail gliding along a piece of grass. “Do you know where I can find a business coach?” I asked.

The snail twitched its antenna. “What do I need a business coach for? I spent my whole life on this clump of grass, and so did my father and so did my father’s father. If it was good enough for them, then it’s good enough for me.”

Maddie, my packmate, trotted past me. “Perhaps you’d have more luck if you asked creatures who have aspired to more than just hanging out at the same clump of grass for generations.”
