I’ve Lost My Momentum

Posted in A Dog's World at 10:13 am by Nick the Border Collie

I’ve been feeling kind of depressed lately. I had a great idea to start a business, I wanted to let everyone know that obedience classes were for humans. I thought dogs would be beating down the door to get their humans to obedience classes.

But I haven’t done anything about it.

“Well, why haven’t you?” asked Maddie, my packmate. “You’re the one with the column. And the blog.”

“I don’t know,” I confessed. “I sort of lost steam.”

“Get back your steam then.”

“I don’t know how,” I said. “How do you get your momentum back when you lost it?”

Maddie sniffed. “You’re the one reading all the books. Why don’t you read something on getting your momentum back?”

I thought about this. “Do you think there is a book out there about getting your momentum back?”

Maddie sighed and got up. “How should I know? You’re supposed to be the smart one. You have the column. And the blog.”

Wuff,

Nick, the border collie

Roxie and the Foxtails

Posted in A Dog's World at 10:50 am by Nick the Border Collie

Roxie, my pack mate, just got back from the vet. Why? It’s foxtail season here in Arizona.

Foxtails, in case you don’t know, are these things that look like little torpedoes but are actually some type of grass seeds. (The don’t look anything like foxtails, and, more importantly, they don’t smell anything like a fox, so I have no idea why humans call them that.)

These foxtails are nasty things. They have little barbed tips that can burrow into fur, ears, and in Roxie’s case, tonsils.

Roxie likes to eat them (I don’t know why. I asked her and she said “because they’re there.” Which doesn’t mean anything to me. I tried a few but I didn’t like them much.) And they end up getting stuck in the roof of her mouth, her throat and her tonsils. And they burrow in.

So Michele took her to the vet so she could have surgery and they could pull them all out.

She’s been lying around a lot since she’s been home. Her mouth still hurts, she told me, but it’s not quite as bad as it was.

“You know, in humans they take out tonsils. Maybe they should take yours out so the foxtails won’t get stuck in them anymore.” I said helpfully. “Then you could eat ice cream for a week. I like ice cream. I could help you eat your ice cream.”

Roxie sighed and lowered her head.

I’ve stopped feeling sorry for myself watching her. I’m still bummed I haven’t done anything with my business idea, but I guess it’s better than having tons of little foxtails stuck in my mouth, throat and tonsils.

Wuff,

Nick, the border collie
