Obedience Classes are for Humans, Not Dogs

Posted in A Dog's World at 11:37 am by Nick the Border Collie

The more I think about it, the more I’ve decided I’m right about obedience classes. Obedience classes are for humans, not dogs. And if more dogs knew this, there would be more attendance at these classes.

I haven’t quite figured out how to make money with this yet, but that’s beside the point (at least for the moment.) I want to see if this is something other dogs would like to know about.

So I decided to ask my fellow obedience class attendees (market research, of course).

“Well, it’s obvious obedience class is for humans, I don’t understand what you’re getting at,” said Shotzie, the daschund.

“But most dogs don’t know that,” I said. “That’s why I need to let them know.”

“Of course, they know it. Why wouldn’t they know it?” said Shotzie.

“Wouldn’t more dogs bring their owners if they knew it?” I said.

Shotzie sniffed.

“Maybe it’s because most dogs think their owners are well trained?” said Ginger, the golden retriever.

Shotzie sniffed again. “Hardly.”

“You’re here,” I said. “Do you think your owner is well trained?”

“My owner wants me to be here,” said Ginger. “And besides, I like being obedient.”

Shotzie growled. “Suck up.”

I decided it was time to talk to someone else. Daschunds can be testy when they realize other dogs don’t agree with them. “Fly, what do you think?”

Fly was another border collie. “Well, I like obedience classes ’cause they give me something to do. I would bring my owner so we can do something together.”

Jack, the rottweiler, pawed the ground. “There are lots of things you can do other than obedience classes. Why this?”

Fly shrugged. “My owner likes it, and yes, I like the idea it’s training my owner as well. So this is good for lots of things.”

To be continued…

Wuff,

Nick, the border collie

Not Enough Walks for This Dog

Posted in A Dog's World, Nick's mail at 12:05 pm by Nick the Border Collie

Dear Nick,

What’s with these owners who work out of their homes but don’t have
time to take their dogs out for hikes and to play with a ball? Has
that ever happened to you?

Every morning she tells me that we’ll take a break later today after
she gets some work done. I take a few naps on the bed (and some on
the couch because she never leaves the office: I figure what she
doesn’t know won’t hurt her), chew on a sock or two, maybe tear up a
roll of toilet paper, fling some of my drool strategically so that it
lands on her computer monitor, and then when she finally leaves her
office and I’m thinking “YES! The time has come!” all she does is
walk into the kitchen and grab a yogurt, gobble it down and toss me
the empty carton to chew on. Then it’s right back to work (if that’s
what you call sitting in front of a computer all day long).

No leash action. I thought only dogs whose people worked somewhere
else all day had it tough, waiting for hours for their owner to come
home, change clothes, cook dinner, check the mail and only THEN would
they get to go out for a walk.

Things aren’t so great for me over here. I hate to complain: I have a
nice house to live in, I have cats to play with (but they’re pretty
boring), and when we do go somewhere I get the entire back seat of
the truck.

Do you think there is something wrong with my owner? Do all other
SOHO people take their dogs on lots of walks during the day?

Thanks for any hope you can give me,

Chester the Chesapeake
