Obedience Class

Posted in A Dog's World at 9:27 am by Nick the Border Collie

It may be summer vacation for human kids, but it’s back to school for me. Michele and I have started obedience classes. I think the classes are supposed to make me more obedient, although I’m starting to wonder. Sometimes it’s hard to say who’s learning more — the two-legged students or the four- legged furry ones.

I was talking to Ralph about this. Ralph is my outside friend. He lives in the boulders that surround my house. All I see is his eyes, so I’m not really sure what kind of animal he is, but he usually comes around while I’m looking out the window.

“It’s like this,” Ralph said. “Humans are big on making things difficult for themselves.”

I pick up my head and perk my ears. “What do you mean?”

Ralph blinked his eyes a couple of times. (He likes to take his time when he talks.) “Well, let’s say I run into a lizard sunning himself on the rocks here. I know what to expect from him — if he thinks I’m a lizard rival, he reacts one way — he challenges me. If he thinks I’m going to eat him, he reacts another way — he runs away. If he thinks I’m no threat, he’ll ask me how my day is going.”

“I tried licking a lizard once,” I said. “Tasted nasty. How do you manage to eat them?”

Ralph blinked at me again. “Why did you lick a lizard?”

I sighed. “Because I was trying to make friends with him, but I don’t think he wanted another friend. He said ‘thanks a lot, now I’m going to have to go find a puddle of water to wash all this doggy slime off instead of laying in the sun.’ He was kind of rude.”

Ralph shook his head. “Maybe that lizard needs obedience classes, too.”

“Or at least etiquette classes.”

“So, back to what I was saying, I know how the lizard is going to react, which makes my life easier. But with humans, it’s hard to know what they’re going to do. Plus, they tend to make things far more complicated than they need to be, which can also make life stressful.”

I got up and stretched. “So how are obedience classes going to help humans with that?”

Ralph’s head popped out of sight. “Everyone would be better off with obedience classes, don’t you think?”

It can be tiring talking to Ralph sometimes. He doesn’t always make much sense.

The Storm

Posted in A Dog's World at 2:38 pm by Nick the Border Collie

It’s been storming this week. We’ve had a bad dust storm, rain and lots of thunder and lightening.

While the rain smells nice, the thunder is kind of scary. I don’t like the thunder. I go find Michele and sit next to her. Roxie, another border collie in my pack, is having a really rough time. She hates thunder worse than me. She’s very unhappy right n^ow because she’s struggling with both the thunder and Michele pulling those horrid foxtails out of her throat (foxtails are these yucky little things that smell like dried grass seed and nothing like foxes — I don’t know why Roxie eats them, they don’t taste very good either). She’s hiding a lot. The problem is she always hides in the same spots so both Michele and the thunder can find her. I tried to tell her she needs to find different hiding spots, but she gave me a very condescending look. Told me I was good for playing tug with and that was about it. If she wanted my advice, she’d ask for it. I’m the only boy dog in the pack AND I’m the youngest (she’s the oldest) but still.

I was only trying to help. So I found a tug toy and presented to her, but she didn’t want to play either.

Females can be very confusing sometimes.

Confusing foxtails

Posted in A Dog's World at 9:19 am by Nick the Border Collie

Ugh. They’re back. These horrid little things called foxtails. I don’t know why they’re called foxtails because they don’t smell anything like foxes. They smell like dried grass seeds. With barbs. Yuck.

Now that they’re back, I have to get brushed more often. And my feet poked at to make sure those foxtails aren’t between my toes. And my mouth pried open to make sure they aren’t stuck in my throat. (That happened to Roxie, another border collie in my pack. She had so many packed in her upper mouth she had to go to the vet and have surgery to get them out. Her breath smelled really bad. It was pretty yucky. Now we all get our mouths checked. Nice going, Roxie.)

But back to the name. The name doesn’t match the smell at all. Actually, it’s very confusing, even for a pretty sharp border collie like me. Something called a foxtail should smell like a fox. Period.

That’s the problem with humans, you always seem to come up with strange names that have nothing to do with anything (and they ESPECIALLY don’t take smells into consideration at all).

So are you guilty of this? Are you confusing your customers with the names of your products or services in your business? Change the name and you may change how well your product or service sells.
