“What do you mean I won’t like the answer?” I asked the quail.
Recently, I had decided to start asking around for a business coach. I realized I needed a business coach after losing my steam about creating a business. I had wanted to get the word out about obedience classes being for humans, not dogs. I thought dogs would be beating down the door to drag their humans to obedience classes.
The squirrel told me the quails could help me find a business coach, but so far the quails weren’t letting me approach them, much less talk to them.
The quail ruffled its feathers. “Well, you see, I do know of a business coach, but…”
I perked my ears. “But?”
The quail pecked at a bug on the ground. “She would be as likely to eat you as coach you.”

The quail squawked. “A business coach? You want a business coach?”

The quail ruffled its wings and said “What’s your question?”

I was so surprised the quail actually asked what my question was I jerked my head. But, I did it so fast I caused another flurry with the quails.
“Wait,” I said. “I’m not eating you. I’m just happy you asked.”
The quails eyed me nervously, hopping around and adjusting their feathers. “So what is it? What’s your question?”
“I was told you can help me find a business coach. Can you?”

I said to the quails, “Hi there. I promise I won’t eat you, I just have a question.”

“No, I said I’m NOT going to eat you. I just have a questions.”
The quails hopped away from me and fluttered their feathers nervously. “You said you were going to eat us.”
I put my head down. Maybe if they didn’t see my teeth they wouldn’t worry. “No, I just have a question.”
The quails eyed me. Clearly we had a trust issue. I kept my head down and tried to look like I had a full stomach.
Finally one ruffled its wings and said …

“You got to keep doing it,” Maddie, my packmate said.

“But I hid all day,” I said. “The quails had plenty of time to come to me.”
Maddie snorted. “One day? You think it’s that easy? You got to keep doing it if you want to see results. It doesn’t happen that quickly.”
I dropped my head into my paws. “So I got to keep doing it?”
Maddie rolled her eyes. “Of course. Consistency, that’s the key. You got to be consistent in what you do if you want to see results.”

I put my plan into action to have the quails come to me.

I hunkered down in the yard. But that didn’t seem to work. Maybe the problem was they could see me. So I found some long grass and made a nest in the middle of that.
I waited so long I took a little nap. It’s pretty warm here in Arizona, especially in the sun. When I woke up, still no quails.
What else could be the problem? I’ve been quiet, I haven’t chased them, I’ve stayed in the same place for a long time. They should have come up to me by now.
I’m missing something…

So I started watching the quails. I thought I could learn how to approach them by getting to know them. (This is good for business too, the more you know about your prospects, the easier it will be to approach them so they don’t run away and reject you.)
But then I thought, maybe it would be better yet to have the quails come to me.

“Pretend to be a quail,” I mused. “How would that work?”

I was trying to talk to Ralph, my outdoor friend. I don’t know what animal he is, I only see his eyes because he lives in the rocks.
Ralph blinked his eyes. “Well, you could start by watching the quails. How do they approach each other?”
I thought about this. “I don’t know. They usually don’t let me get close enough to them.”
Ralph blinked his eyes again. “Then why don’t you try watching them from a distance?”

“What do you mean that might be part of my problem?” I asked Ralph.

Ralph blinked his eyes. “Other animals eat quails. Like dogs. Dogs eat quails. So when you chase after the quails and yell at them, you scare them because they think you might eat them.”
I thought about this. “So what do I do? How do I approach them?”
Ralph blinked his eyes again. “Why don’t you pretend to be a quail. If you were a quail, how would you approach other quails?”
